What the certification means

A certified facility, or a certified unit inside one, has to meet extra state standards (26 TAC §553.27 and §553.29). Those cover staff training on dementia care, a secured environment, activity programming, and disclosure statements for families. Certification applies to a specific number of beds, and that's the figure we list. A facility can have more licensed beds overall than certified memory care beds.

Questions worth asking on a tour

• How many of your beds are actually in the certified unit, and how many are open?
• What dementia training do night-shift staff have?
• Can I see your most recent inspection, and what changed afterward?
• What happens if my parent's needs go beyond what you can handle?
